Snow Moves Into Maine

AUGUSTA (AP) -- School cancellations are piling up in Maine as fast as the snow is falling, as commuters take to the streets and highways in the state's first major snowstorm of the season.
Three inches are on the ground already in some parts of Maine, and a foot to 20 inches will pile up before it's all over.

Road conditions were not good as the morning commute got under way, but no major problems are reported. Police are urging commuters to use extra caution and to give themselves extra time to get to work.

The National Weather Service says blowing and drifting snow will become a problem as the storm continues throughout the day. Winds late tonight will gust as high as 40 miles per hour. Scattered power outages are possible this afternoon and evening.

The biggest accumulations will be in northern and mountain areas.
