'American Idol': Some singers find old is gold Tuesday

Why the heck did you choose that song? That was the major complaint of Tuesday's "American Idol" performance round, where the top nine "Idol" wannabes had to pick a popular iTunes download to sing. So, basically, it was the contestants singing a collection of songs that have hit the Billboard charts in the past 40 years.

Some attempted to take on current artists (No Doubt, Usher, the Fray, Rascal Flatts), while others opted for a blast from the past (Wild Cherry, Billy Joel, Bill Withers). And how they interpreted the tunes varied wildly.

Adam Lambert has become one of the show's most eagerly anticipated showmen, and Tuesday was no exception. His song — Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" — was a cringe-worthy choice, but he immediately put all concerns to rest. Lambert put his own spin on the '70s hit, making it part retro and part 2009 — not an easy thing to do. And after last week's stripped-down country performance, he was smart to switch things up.
